Spelling Bee!

Today we had our first annual spelling bee. The students did great. Each round the students were given a word starting at their grade level and then going up one grade level at a time.

Congrats to our winners! Jack (Gr. K) won for the Juniors. He spelled a grade 2 word! Georgia, Logan, and Natasha were the Senior winners!

Well, this is what I do for fun at night! But seriously, I do. haha. I am so excited to show the kids. The bag isn't done yet (still have to add the red to his hat and bow). I received the Cat in the Hat plush in the mail and I could not wait to make the kids a take home bag. This plush is a soft, cuddly creature so I have a feeling he may be the kids new favourite stuffy.

Making Inferences!

Today we learned how to make an inference. We had a great time trying to guess what was in my bag. They figured out all the items but then they had to figure out why it was in there.

Our Dinosaur Project

Today we presented our dinosaur research. As a group we had to make a poster and a model. The kids did a great job with the assignment.

The group of girls! Kelsey, Alex, Quin, Vanessa, and Tatum studied Triceratops and Edmontosaurus.

Sam, Noah, Adam, Grizz, Daniel, and Boston (not in photo) presented the T-Rex and Brontosaurus

Luca, Tosh, Jack, Owen, and Jason came up with a team name, Primevil! They studied Pteranodons and Stegosaurus.

Thanks Jude for sharing this photo as well. These boys worked on their project at Owen's house. They look like they had a good time.

The students did an amazing job today. They worked really hard and created some amazing work. Often a student can get intimidated by trying to do a portrait, by giving them half the picture they can learn placement by drawing/painting the mirror image.

Valentine's Day!

We were so excited today for Valentine's Day. We could barely wait to open our Valentine's bags.

Look at the smiles on their faces!!!!

And the opening begins.... I loved watching them all open their Valentines. They would open a letter and then just shout out THANK YOU so and so. They had very good manners! haha.

In the afternoon we had our Valentine's Party. We had a ton of fun!

One station was a games station.

Another station was our activity fun booklet.

Of course, we had cupcake walk (musical chairs)!

I thought it was pretty cute that Logan (Gr. 9) student had Jack (Gr. K) student sitting on his lap helping him play the music for our cupcake walk. My heart melted a bit!

Over the weekend, I got a puppy. His name is Arnold. He came to visit the kids today and they were very, very excited to pet him.

Arnold is a Bichon Shitzu Cross. He is 2 1/2 months old. So far I know he loves to cuddle and hide my socks!

We Made Valentine's Cards

In art, we made these adorable valentines cards. Parents, act surprised ok?! On the front it says, "Open My Heart" and on the inside it says " I keep my memories of you cherished in the layers of my heart." They worked so hard on them and loved to use the glitter glue! Dinosaur Research Project

Dinosaur Research Project - Students have worked on their research for two weeks in school. Now the students have 1 weeks to work on it outside of school in their groups. The project is due February 13th.

Group 1 (Triceratops and Edmontosaurus) - Quin, Vanessa, Alex, Kelsey, and Tatum

Group 2 (Tyrannosaurus Rex and Brontosaurus) - Boston, Noah, Daniel, Grizz, Adam, and Sam

Thanks again to my dad. He has been a very busy man. If I didn't know any better I would say he would love to come to our school. :) He has made us a new toy for our centres.

Wooden K-NEX! The boys were very excited to test out our new toy. They built forts for their dinosaurs.

And of course, the log blocks he built last week are still a huge hit. Here the kids made a game to stack the logs and each person takes a turn trying to knock the other towers down. They were so creative!

Today we started to make our Valentine's gift. We were very busy working away to get them done. We did such a good job but you are going to have to wait (parents!) until Valentine's Day to see them.

Spelling Today!

On Wednesday's we do word work. We test each other with our spelling words and we get to spell our words using fun manipulatives. Some of the manipulatives are tracers, pebbles, play doh, stamps, magnetic letters, wikki sticks, and more.

The Kindergarten caught up on our printing from yesterday. They are learning the letter G and Gilda the Goose this week.

Thank you Danielle for helping us this week. She helped all the grades learn the sort of their words.

These are wikki sticks if you are unfamiliar with them. Its a harder string dipped in colored wax.

Today Liebel Loot opened for the month of January. The kids were really excited to spend their hard earned money. Some had up to $101 big bucks to spend. I think everyone was very happy with their goodies.

We Made Granola Today!

We had a great time in cooking class today. We made granola in class today. We picked out all the dried fruit we wanted. We also made the granola mix with oats, honey, cinnamon, and sunflower seeds.

We were told all about the different fruits and what each of our jobs will be.

Math Today!

Today the Grade 3's finish up their unit on measurement. They were taking the perimeter of my things, such as my desk and some posters on the wall.

Owen measures the perimeter of my desk. I think he ended up with my desk being 372 cm in perimeter.

Jason measures a name tag to make sure it is under 10 cm.

Daniel in Grade 2 is also starting measurement. They use snap cubes and links as "units" to measure objects in our classroom. The three objects he chose were a train track, car, and a beam.

Alex measures a tape dispenser, a container, and a sharpie using snap cubes as her "unit" of measurement.

Grizz Brought Scaredy Back!

Scaredy had a very, very intense visit with Grizz. He apparently got into an accident. Thankfully he was visiting the Doctors house. He even had an X Ray done! haha. The kids could not stop laughing when Grizz was reading his story out today.

Today We Made Brownies!

Today we made brownies. We really had to work hard today. We weren't told what to do but instead we had to read the recipe and figure it out on our own. We did really good! We almost put in a 1/4 CUP of salt but thankfully Liz caught it in time!

We were put into four groups. Two groups made the icing and two groups made the brownie batter. Above is an icing group.

Dinosaur Art

For art on Thursday we made dinosaur art. We were given the choice between a T-Rex, Stegosaurus, and a Brontosaurus. The students used water color to paint the dinosaur and then we used washable black marker. Finally, we used a spray gun and made the black marker bleed a bit.

Our goal for this lesson was to use various colors and blend them together. The kids did a fantastic job.

Finally the pictures we have all been anticipating.

Math Today!

Today in math we were very busy.

The Grade 3's are learning perimeter. They made a 6m perimeter using large paper. They had so much fun and wanted to stay in at recess to do it.

The Grade 2's were learning addition using a variety of number combinations. Example: 4+4 = 6+2

We Made Corn Muffins!

Today we learned about Martin Luther King. We learned about what he fought for (racial equality) and what he tried to stop (racial segregation). In memory of Martin Luther King we decided to do something from the South..... Corn Muffins!

We scooped out the dough and put them in the tin.

We tasted the batter and realized there was no sugar in the one batch! haha. We then put it back in the bowl and added some sugar. Hopefully they turn out alright.

We Learned About First Nation Drumming

Russel Podgurney from the Osoyoos Native Band came to teach us traditional drumming. We had so much fun learning the old tradition music. We were pretty amazed that Russel can sing in four different languages and can recall over 400 songs!!!

We Made Dinosaur Soap!

We have started our dinosaur unit. The kids are so excited to learn about dinosaurs. We kicked off our unit with a volcano eruption. The kids were so mesmerized by the magma. They were so excited when the volcano erupted and underneath appeared a dinosaur.

There is the volcano. Stay tuned for our dinosaur picture. The dinosaur is still growing in the water until thursday.

For TREAT day this week we made dinosaur soap. They had so much fun mixing the gelatin, bubble bath, and food coloring! They each made one to take home.

They are very squishy so I told the kids that the soap is more for their bath then to wash hands with at the sink.

Voila! Our dinosaur soap! They thought it was pretty funny that the dinosaur's were taking a bath in their soap.

Elf on The Shelf!

We have an elf! It came all the way from the North Pole. We named our elf, Sparkle. We learned about Sparkle and how every night she leaves to report back to Santa. Our elf will let Santa know if we were good that day or not. The funny thing is though, Sparkle doesn't remember where it was sitting that day so every morning when it returns the elf is in a new spot. The kids have a lot of fun searching for Sparkle.

We Made Oreo Truffles!

Oh boy for TREAT day today it was really fun. We smashed oreo's, mushed cream cheese, and dipped them in chocolate.

We first smashed the Oreo cookies.

Then mixed the cream cheese with the Oreo cookie.

They went in the freezer for 15 minutes.

After we dipped them in chocolate and put sprinkles on them.

Yummy!

We Are Done Our Mapping Unit!

As a reward for completing our mapping unit the students were given the ultimate treasure hunt. They were completely surprised and were running around like mad to find the next clue. I could barely keep up with them. I don't know who had a bigger smile on their face me or them!

So it begins. They were given a map of the school to find their first clue.

They found it! It was in the office.

Yes I got tricky! There was a clue in the fridge.

Quin thought it was pretty cool that the paper was freezing cold.

The final clue was hiding in our library.

They each received a certificate of completion. They were thrilled to find a sucker on their last clue.

We Wrote to Santa!

We wrote to Santa and we are so excited because Santa will be writing us back. We talked about what we want for Christmas and what good things we have done this year. Here are the letters just in case you would like to read them before they are sent off.

Bev Lambert came on Monday to teach us about Metis' various traditions. She taught us numerous dances (duck dance, Metis Girl Dance, waltz, belt or sash dance, etc.). The kids were exhausted but we continued to dance for almost the whole entire day. We also learned how to make bannock. We made it a bit differently than last time. We fried it in oil and coated it with sugar. The kids seemed to really like it both ways: biscuit style and basically like a donut. We also learned a little bit about traditional houses, transportation, cultural respect, and costumes.

Unfortunately my camera died and so I couldn't take any pictures. However I did use my iphone to capture one picture of the girls in their amazing outfits. The girls loved that the silver coins on their dresses made noise when they danced.

We Made Patterning Bracelets!

Today we made made patterns with beads. We then picked our favourite pattern and made it into a bracelet. We all decided it would be a very cool bag keychain!

Christmas Cards Using Inchie Art

Alex was a great VIP. She shared with us her bell (from her grandmother), wolf pictures (from grandma), her name written in Chinese, and her favourite book about a Unicorn and a girl named Claire.

Inchie Art!

For the Christmas card contest this year we decided to make inchie art. The first step is done: creating the inchies. The next step will be to glue those pieces in tile form on a piece of paper.

The kids did a great job. The seniors were a big help today. They each had one junior and helped them with every centre. I don't know what I would do without them!

Welcome Our New Student... Jack!

Jack is in Grade K. Today was his first day. It was very exciting. He made his name tag and toured our classroom. He already really loves our train set.

We Made Gingerbread Houses and a Christmas Train!

We made a gingerbread house and a christmas train today for TREAT day. They were very excited to lick the icing and put candy all ALL over the house and train.

We start the first steps gluing (with icing) the frames of our buildings.

Then we decorated them.

Ta da! All done! We made two great pieces.

Then we enjoyed them! Yum yum.

Thank you so much Manon for helping us build these wonderful pieces. We loved making them and eating them too!

The Giving Tree By Shel Silverstein

Yesterday we read The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. This book is so beautifully written and the children loved that the pictures were in black and white. We discussed the importance of friendship and what it takes to be a good friend.

Remembrance Day Commemoration Ceremony

Our Ceremony was a huge success. The kids were great and we had a HUGE turn out from parents and community (thank you fire fighters for attending). We were all given a home made poppy at the beginning and later we posted them on our gallery tour in remembrance.

Our Ceremony started off with O Canada. Then the Juniors presented their book, "A Poppy is to Remember" (hopefully posted soon).

Then the seniors presented one of the three poems they created about the war.

Then we had a gallery tour of our art and historical items.

Laura brought in historical artifacts of her Great Uncles and family. Some of the books date back to 1922. It was pretty amazing.

The art represented warm and cold colors. The warm and cold colors showed that war and peace can be viewed as warm and cold. Above it represents warm colors of war.

We Learned How To Make Smoothies!

What a special treat we had today. Manon taught us how to make our very own smoothies. We picked the fruit we wanted, then added yogurt, and juice. Voila! We made a smoothie!

They were so yummy we drank it all up. Great start to our morning. We loved making smoothies. Thank you so much Manon for letting us use your brand new blender and teaching us how to make smoothies.

Recipe:

1/2 cup of assorted fruit

1/2 cup of juice

2 large spoonfuls of yogurt

NEW Word Wall

It has been very difficult for me to come up with a word wall when you have four grades in one class. Within those grades, I have Kindergarten whom are just beginning to learn letters all the way to Grade 3 whom are already reading novels. However, this is a start to what I hope is a very glorious word wall located in our calendar area.

As you can see the colors represent their grades. Grade K's word wall are the letters they have learned so far this year. Grade 1 (orange), wahoo has not made any errors on their spelling tests therefore have no words posted. Grade 2 (pink) and 3 (green), these are the errors that occurred in their spelling tests. I am going to hold the students accountable for making sure these words especially are written properly. I love that the word, "friend" is up there because that is a tricky one. Hopefully the kids will be as excited as I am for this word wall. I am hoping to add their 'no excuse' errors as well to this wall of greatness.
