This was our second STEM class this school year and the kids LOVED it. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. The children are required to work in a team environment on a challenge question. Last time, they were challenged to build a pyramid using red solo cups but the trick was they couldn't use their hands. Instead they were required to use string and an elastic to create the pyramid. Today, the students were challenged to build the tallest freestanding structure only using spaghetti noodles, marshmallows, string, and tape.
It's interesting to see how they were able to solve problems (i.e. spaghetti noodles breaking) and work together to build the structures. These lessons have so much more packed into them than just building the tallest structure.
Interested in trying these at home: Solo Cup Challenge, Marshmallow Challenge
