Today in Math we were given a challenge question: Invent a machine for counting collections of items up to 1000. They were stumped! So we had to bring out some treasure kits and get counting. Quite quickly they were noticing that counting by 1s not only took a long time but was an inaccurate way to count. So they had to think how could they count large numbers easier?
I had three children working on a really big number... 502 to be exact! They realized the only way to count this big number is to make them into tens and then rows of 10.
The kids created some amazing machines that can count large numbers by grouping them into 10s and then grouping them into 100 if they need to.
Great math lesson today!
