Thermal Energy

Today we learned about radiation.  Radiation is basically the heat you can feel without having to touch anything.  Its a form of energy that is transferred by waves.  For example, the sun or feeling the heat when you put your hands next to a fire.

Today we learned how to make a solar oven from a pizza box.  The kids were very excited to see this oven in action.  Unfortunately we don't have a lot of sunshine lately (we don't need it to be hot but we do need some sun) and we have an overhang outside our window.  The kids think we might have better luck sticking our oven outside.  We are currently trying to melt marshmallows from the sun so we will see.  I looked it up and apparently the pizza box ovens can get up to 200 degrees so which is pretty hot!

Here is a video of how to make one.  In case you would like to try at home!

If you haven't checked it out yet... check out your child's Fresh Grade account to see more images of our presentation on Thermal Energy by High Touch.  It was pretty amazing!
