JANUARY NEWSLETTER!

Big White Community School
January News

Happy New Year!
Welcome back to school. We hope that everyone is well rested and had a good holiday!
Thank you for all of the Christmas cards and gifts.  Your kind thoughts are really appreciated!

January Monthly Focus
Juniors
-       In Language Arts, we will be continuing our unit on poetry. Ms. Craigey will be working on novel studies/guided reading with the class.
-       In Science, we will be learning about Rocks and Minerals.  We hope to bring in a guest speaker to discuss mining.
-       In Socials, Ms. Craigey will teach the class about themselves, their community, and their country.

Seniors
-       In Language Arts, we will be doing a unit on poetry. Ms. Craigey will be working on novel studies with the class. We will also begin home journals – the students will be required to write for 20 minutes per night on any given topic. This has been explained to the class, but instructions will be posted on my blog as well!
-       In Math, Grade 4-6 will be doing Geometry. Grade 7-8 will be focusing on Fractions, Decimals, and Percents. Grade 9 will be working on polygons and measurement.
-       In Science, each student will be teaching the class an experiment (and explain the concept).

Skiing and Skating
Our ski lessons will begin the first week of school.  The ski lessons take place every Thursday from 1-3.  Please pack all your child’s ski gear to school on Thursdays and pick up your child outside of the Daycare in the village (by the clock tower).  Please make sure your child has all the gear they need to ski (including a helmet).  Please note the end time on Thursday is 3:00.

Our first week of skating will be the week of January 14th. We will be skating from 2:30-3:30 on Mondays and Tuesdays – please make sure that your child has the appropriate safety gear! Helmets with cages are highly recommended for skating!  You can pick your child up from the skating rink on these days.  Also, everyone is always welcome to skate or help out with transporting the kids from the school to the rink.

Hot Lunches
We will not be having hot lunches in the month of January. We may reconsider this again in the future, but for the time being, we will not be doing cooking class.

Thank You!
Thank you to everyone who came out and watched our Christmas presentation! The students spent a lot of time working on this, and it was nice to have such a good turnout! Parents – thanks for taking the time to get costumes, practice lines, and for listening to those catchy tunes over and over! We couldn’t have done it without the practice at home!

Volunteers
Thank you to the Fire Department for helping us with the play, helping in the junior class, and crawling through hip deep snow the forest for gym.
Thank you to Marlene and Susan for helping with the library and hot lunch.
Thank you to Liz for helping with hot lunch and book orders.
Thank you to Joy for helping in the Junior class.
Thank you to Christa for helping with Gingerbread Houses.
Thank you to all parents for your support at home!
