{Physical Change} Learning About States of Matter

Today we learned more about physical change.  We watched an awesome video on changes in matter from Brainpop Jr.  Then we started on our science experiment: Melting Crayons!

The experiment is pretty simple and straightforward.  The supplies you will need are: a silicone tray (not an ice cube tray but the ones for the oven), crayons, a microwave, and toothpicks (to mix the colours - we didn't end up using the toothpicks because they mixed on their own).

After the crayons wrapper is peeled off, break the crayons into smaller pieces, fill a tray with your crayons (we used 3 crayons each), and put in microwave (for 10 minutes).  Keep an eye on the microwave!

Let the crayons cool off or if you are pressed for time put them in the refrigerator.  I just let them sit out over lunch so the kids could see them and they were cooled and ready when they came back in from recess.

Ta-da! The students made their very own crayon colour!

Here is the experiment sheet we use for every experiment we do.  You can get your free download here.  It is a very simple worksheet but so effective with a multi-grade classroom.  My expectations can change for each student but the paper doesn't need to.

The students were so excited for this experiment and when they each got to take their own crayon home they were BEYOND happy.  They couldn't stop using their crayon for the rest of the day.  Most even kept them in their pockets!
