End of Our Unit on Patterning

We celebrated our last day learning about patterning with a graffiti wall.  We all had a lot of fun thinking about all the different things we learned in patterning and writing it all over the "wall" (well paper on the wall!).  We sure did learn a lot this term and I loved seeing the words: attributes, size, colour, etc written all over the paper!

Our graffiti wall is on display outside our classroom in the hall.  Come on in and take a look!

This and That!

Math for the Kindergarten and Grade 1's.  They measured using hearts!

The Grade 3's went on a math hunt for double digit addition and subtraction questions.

Capturing moments of play.

Our new light table is an old x-ray display.

Today the children were told to graffiti the wall!

PJ Day and Wacky hair day!

Working on our YES projects!  We created heart mandalas.

Our new magnet centre

Our YES banner.  We are ready for the show on Thursday.  Hope to see you all there!

Counting Collections

Seems simple right?  Count a collection?  I attended a conference over the weekend that showcased the value and importance of this foundational skill.

Counting is more than repeating a rote sequence and
recognizing the numerals. Learning to count while
simultaneously developing a sense of quantities and
number relationships is an important foundation for students. It is essential that the student understands a quantity represents the number and how numbers are related. Counting is finding out how many.

I took this right from the resource we obtained at our conference.  Click here for the full PDF information.  We set off with today's intention being very simple, count the collections.  However, after sitting in on their counting and nudging them into different directions in counting we will be changing some things up next week.

We documented the numbers on the board.

These partners decided to record their counting on a piece of paper and then putting them up on the whiteboard later.

Some students were starting to group the dots into 2s, 5s, and 10s.

We reflected on some different ways we counted.  Some of the collections were too large and were too difficult to count so we will be making smaller collections for next Monday.  It was great to see all the different counting strategies: lining them up and touch counting, moving the object from space to another and counting, and grouping the objects.  I look forward to this counting exploration and where it will lead us.

October is Here!

Welcome October.  The kids are so excited with Halloween and Thanksgiving happening this month. Everyday I hear the kids talking about their costumes and what they will be wearing.
Our Halloween-themed books are out in our classroom library.

We played a wonderful game of Boo Bump in math today.  It's always a fan favourite in our classroom.  If you are interested in playing this game at home please ask and I will send home a copy of the game with your child.
