Wednesday

Today we brought out some new toys for the upcoming month of November.  My Dad created this amazing puppet theatre that can also be a grocery store, clothing store, whatever your imagination can think of.  The kids were pretty excited and lots of play, discovery, and learning happened today.

In Socials today we started our Community Guide Book to Big White.  Our first job is to draw where we live and what it looks like.  The students drew from the picture in their head of what Big White and Canada looks like.
"I drew Canada with lots of squiggly lines around because that's how it looks from above."

"Snow is very important to draw at Big White."

"If I draw the coffee shop I know where I live.  This is my house and there is a short cut to go straight down the mountain to school."

Monday

Thanks to a couple handy people (My Dad and Wife) we now have these really awesome locker tags!  We were all pretty excited coming into school today and seeing these.

We also had new art up on our door!  Funny enough, we don't have any bulletin board space available right now haha.  However, the students amazing Andy Goldsworthy inspired art is up in our room.

Today in writing we all received our very own dictionaries.  We talked about how to look up words we can't spell, and where we can find words we don't know.  We also have a new word wall up too!  Today we practiced using our dictionaries for words we don't know how to spell.

In Socials, we learned about needs and wants in our community.  We had a hard time understanding that skiing was a want.  Yes, it is exercise and we need that! haha.

Below are a few examples of our brainstorming.

^^ Doesn't this just melt your heart?!?! Cloud watching as a want!  So adorable.  That might just fit under the need category hehe.

With this beautiful warm weather the students are bringing in flowers to brighten our days up.  I must admit it brings a smile to my face too!  {Grandma you recognize the vases?}

Happy Monday!

Happy Wednesday!

The Kindergarten were so proud that they connected all the snap cubes all the way to the front door of our school.

^^ How adorable are they?!?

In Socials, we described our community and why we all love it up here on this mountain.  We also learned about helpers in our community.  Next, we are hoping to get some community members into our school!

The kids are always creating wonderful little creations.

New art for our classroom.

I have always strived to make our classroom feel very home-like and comfortable.  I am constantly snapping photos of the children and printing them off to place around our classroom.  The more photos of them the more they feel like they belong.  I am so proud of our classroom and love when parents come in and discover all the little things that make it home.

Always creating!

Monday

Today in Socials we investigated our community map.  We noticed that the map showed all the ski runs but didn't show the street names or the water features.  We decided we needed a community map that shows more of the community not just the ski runs.
We worked hard to try and copy google maps version but it was a little tough.

So I started to make a map that we are going to photocopy and find out where the water features are, and where we live.

In writing we learned about capital letter and lower case letters (Grades K and 1).  We underlined all the capitals in some phrases and we noticed that our names begin with a capital.  In Grade 2 and 3 we learned that we write about things that interest us and our readers.  We brainstormed way we can write so others can enjoy our writing too.  For example, neat printing, spelling correctly, punctuation, spaces between our words, interesting subjects, and writing with our imagination.

We had a bit of time to play this afternoon.  These were some of the more popular things to play with today.

 Happy Monday!

Children Around the World

In Socials Studies, we are learning about children around the world.  We have been to some pretty incredible places.  Take a look at the children we have met.  Each student has the same information on their sheets in their socials duotangs.

This bulletin board is located inside of our classroom! Come take a look :)

We Are Done Our Mapping Unit!

As a reward for completing our mapping unit the students were given the ultimate treasure hunt.  They were completely surprised and were running around like mad to find the next clue.  I could barely keep up with them.  I don't know who had a bigger smile on their face me or them!

So it begins.  They were given a map of the school to find their first clue.

They found it!  It was in the office.

Yes I got tricky!  There was a clue in the fridge.

Quin thought it was pretty cool that the paper was freezing cold.

The final clue was hiding in our library.

They each received a certificate of completion.  They were thrilled to find a sucker on their last clue.

These were the clues.  :)
