Today we started part two of writing a letter. We discussed why we write letters, who they have received letters from, and who has written a letter before. It is interesting because letter writing is sort of becoming a lost art. Most students mentioned receiving cards for birthdays or special holidays but none of the students have ever received just a letter from a friend or a family member (from what they told me). So I figured we will have to change that! We read the book, "The Long, Long Letter" by Elizabeth Spurr. It is a really cute book about two sisters who write to each other and one sister sends the other sister a really long letter. It inspired the kids to all want to write a very long letter themselves!
Then, we discussed the steps to writing a letter. We figured out the steps to writing a letter but the students are still unsure about the whole stamp and address part.
Finally, we figured the parts of a letter and made a checklist of what a letter needs to consist of.
Next lesson, we are going to be writing to an author! I can't wait to tell the kids who it is. Stay tuned to find out the author too!
