Letter Writing Unit: Mail and How It Works

Today we started our letter writing unit.  The kids were so excited because we have two sets of penpals now.  We have our friends in Beaverdell but we also have now a Grade 1 classroom in Florida.  We are so excited to correspond with students from another country.

To start our lesson off we first watched a video of mail and how it works.

Then, we each were given a handy dandy writing folder.  This will be a great organizing tool for the students to hold all their letters.  We also will be adding a reference on how to write on the inside of our folders.

We introduced our letter writing with our first letters from our Grade 1 Florida friends.  Then we read the book, Please Write Back! By Jennifer Morris.  This book was great for student's prior knowledge questioning and afterwards we did a picture walk with some oral comprehension questions.

To finish off our lesson, we started to write our friendly letters to our penpals.  We are hoping to finish these off and send them by the end of the week.
