Science + Art = FUN!

First off, I can't believe I haven't blogged in so long.  I have the nice weather in Kelowna to blame for that!  This is going to be a long post because I have so much to update you on.  We have been learning so much in our classroom and it's all very exciting.

In Science, we are learning about force and motion.  We were given the question, how can a car run without any gas?  We explored how energy can make things go by learning about different ways of making things go.  We created rubber-band racers and experimented how to figure out how many times to twist a rubber band in order to win the "sweet spot" race.

Here it is in action:

We built our racers all on our own (well, with a little help from the Seniors).

This week's Science class, we were asked how could you win a tug-of-war against a bunch of adults? We learned to think about pushes and pulls - forces- and how they can accomplish extraordinary things; like elastic bands can cut a watermelon with enough force.  Then we created Hopper Poppers and watched force in action.

^^ Here is the video we watched in class.

^^ Great action shot!  Do you see the hopper in the air?

^^ Another great action shot!  They were comparing the hopper to the height of a student.  Did the Hopper jump below the shoulders, between the shoulders and the head, or over the head?

Finally, last week we read this book The Noisy Paint Box and learned about Kandinsky's childhood.  We were all very inspired how he paints "music" and how the painting makes him feel rather than focussing on creating a pretty picture.  Some children thrived and loved having no boundaries where others weren't too sure about letting go.  We listened to African music while creating these pieces.

Aren't these beautiful!

I will try really hard to post more often so I don't have to overload you next time with one blog post.  Happy Tuesday!
