Back to School BUMP + An Apple Mystery!

Today we started our math lesson with a good ol' game of BUMP!  This game is a classic that can be played anytime of the year (we play boo bump, and valentine bump too).  The students absolutely love the game and it is appropriate for all ages.  I have the youngest students just recognizing the number they saw and covering the spaces, the middle aged students adding the dice together, and the oldest group skip counting by the number they rolled.

I created the large number sheet and the dice sheet for my Kindergarten students (click on the sheets for your free download).  The addition sheet is a free download and can be found here.  The skip counting apple sheet is also a free download and can be found here.

Apple Mystery
I found this book, The Apple Orchard Riddle, in the public library and knew I had to make this my apple unit introduction.  Who doesn't love a good mystery to get you interested?  The box was made and given to me by my Mother-in-Law and the the decals, worksheet, and clue papers can be found here.
I first hid the clues around the classroom and the students had to find them.  I had them fill out the mystery worksheet and take a guess.  Then I brought out the mystery box.

Finally, it was pretty hard to keep the secret any longer and we had to discover where the star could possibly be in the apple.

We sure found it!  Show me a little red house with no windows and no door, but with a star inside.

Finally, we finished the apple mystery by reading the end of the book where the students in the book also reveal the secret mystery.
We all took our mystery clues home and we plan to all trick our parents at home tonight!
