Kindness and Play

It was Pink Shirt Day today and that means we celebrate kindness and what it means to be a good friend.  We did talk about bullies in our class but we put more emphasis on spreading kindness and being kind to one another.  All of the kids were extra wonderful today with one another.  I always say this but I am so lucky to have such a sweet and caring (oh and I can't forget cute!) children.

The Grade 3's are learning how to measure using a ruler.  So we took it to the classroom and they are measuring everything they can grab their hands on.

I went to a teacher workshop yesterday and I was very inspired by all the play talk we heard.  It was Kindergarten directed however all children are needing play!  Below are two articles on why play is so important.  It was a breath of fresh air hearing how beneficial play is!
(You might have to click on the images to read them)

We did get to sneak in a bit of play today!  There are so many different types of play and I could see so many different types of play going on in this classroom today.  I really tried to be an observer today with very little interference in their play.  I wanted to document some of the dialogue to get an understanding of what they were doing, as well as, learn more about each child's interests.
"Even cars will be allowed."  "Let's make passages to get through to each other."  "All of my horses are strong and can kick like this (bucks both legs back)."

" Let's go fishing."  "We need more food before Winter."  "This food is for after dinner only."  "I'm not a kid so I can eat what I want anytime!"  "I will get food for the family."  "It's her birthday.  Let's all sing.  Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you...."

"It's our fort.  This is our couch.  The egg chairs are how we get out and shhhh... we have a secret entrance."

"This is mini bomb just like the one I have at home!"
"I'm the owner and you two are dogs.  Sorry I have to go to work you guys.  This is my job!"  "You two go shopping."

I found this quote the other day and thought it fit quite well with being a teacher.  These little ones teach me something new everyday!
