November books and SLIME!

 We have some November themed books on display for the children to read.  

Also, a beautiful poem that I have already heard lots of littles repeating throughout their day.

To finish our matter unit off we made slime!  The kids were very excited about this.

Mrs. Liebel taught a beautiful lesson on how even teachers make mistakes!  haha.  I have made slime in the past and funny enough I loved this recipe because each student could make an individual amount of slime.  However, I must've read it wrong and had the kids just add borax powder to their slime instead of making it into a Borax solution.  haha... oh it was a fun lesson indeed!  

BUT I totally redeemed myself!  We tried to make slime again today and we were very successful.

November

It is a new month and we have taken all of our Halloween decorations away and filled our classroom library with wonderful books on Canada, Peace, and Battles/War.  I was really hoping to get more books on military just to peak the boys interests in reading but I was only able to find one book.

I also suckered Mrs. Austin into taking photos of all of us on Halloween for our birthday board.  I love that they are all in costume for the photos.

The picture contains the kids whose birthdays are in that month and they are each holding their birthdate number.  I bought this cute little package here.

Peace Song

I know I have been slacking off in blogging but I forgot to mention a neat project we did for Remembrance Day.

In a previous post I mentioned creating a peace song pocket chart for the students to sing.  We were practicing the song and we decided to make our own peace songs.  We brainstormed some peace describing words and got right to work.

We used the worksheet below to do a rough draft at the top and then we made a good copy on the bottom.  My Grade 1 students just did the one copy and my Kindergartens only did the bottom copy re-writing the original song.  You will see in the students work and all the variety of adaptions for this lesson.

Then we cut out our good copies and glued them on a 8.5x14 paper.  

I scanned their songs, printed them, and made a classroom book for them to enjoy.  The song is so beautiful and the students thoroughly enjoyed making their own songs.

Remembrance Day Pocket Chart (freebie)

With Remembrance Day coming up I felt it important to remind the students of what we are remembering.  I never really use pocket charts and when I came across Deanna Jump's Monster Poem the students flipped when they read it.  They were really hoping we would do a new poem every week.  I can't promise every week but I created two poems into pocket chart formation.  In Flanders Field by John McCrae (the poem is long so I had to do it on two pocket charts) and Peace Song (uncertain who the original author is).
