We have been very busy with our Space Unit. The kids are over-the-moon excited to learn about Space so it makes it easy to get them excited. They love everything about Space!
We are using this book below for every lesson. Thanks to SD #23 I was able to borrow some copies for the students to study Space. Also, thanks to Mrs. Austin (Jenn's Mom) for the amazing workbook she created for Space.
First couple of lessons we learned about asking deep thinking questions and how to write down only keywords from a book.
These examples range from a Kindergarten student to a Grade 3 student.
Last week, we studied the hot planets. Then we answered some questions by taking keywords from the book. The kids loved learning about Mercury (giant holes called craters and "The Spider") and Venus (more than 1600 volcanoes).
After our reading and writing we enjoyed watching the Canadian astronaut, Chris Hadfield. He is up in Space right now living in the International Space Station. There is a ton of videos put out by the Canadian Space Agency. I recommend watching all of the videos with your children at home. They are absolutely amazing! I have learned so much about astronauts and Space myself!
This week, we are starting our planet research. We are using all the resources we have on Space. These two books below are really amazing. They are written for a Grade 2 level reader and the one book has Neil Armstrong involved in writing the book. This company writes more of these books but I have only come across these two at Value Village.
Finally I have a new addition to our Space table. I am still looking for the Safari Toob toys but I thought this would be pretty cool for the kids to play with. I overheard a boy playing with it today and describing the planets he was encountering while the astronaut was floating in Space. Well worth the money!
Next week, all about the stars!
